Unit 3 design show
A few days ago, the Unit 3 students showcased their work, offering us, the Unit 1 students, a glimpse into our future learning and presentation expectations. This exhibition was particularly significant for us, as it provided insights into the artistic direction and study areas, something many of us in Unit 1 are still navigating.
Upon entering the exhibition, one aspect immediately stood out: the abundance of ceramic works. Bowls, dishes, and other forms dominated the space. This prevalence led me to ponder whether these choices were born out of personal affinity or influenced by factors like cost, resource availability, or ease of creation. Interestingly, this ceramic-centric display, despite its craftsmanship, dampened my enthusiasm for exploring ceramics in my own work, a medium I have previously engaged with.
Another observation was the general lack of works that resonated with me personally. This isn't to diminish the efforts of my peers but to acknowledge the subjective nature of art appreciation. One notable exception was a strikingly large ceramic egg, impossible to overlook. Its creator, evidently a mature artist, presented it with a depth that was both commendable and thought-provoking. Yet, this piece, while impressive, left me with more questions than answers about my own artistic pursuits.
In reflecting on this experience, I realize my indifference isn't tied to specific materials or techniques, nor am I driven by a sense of societal responsibility in my art. This acknowledgement might portray me as an artist or designer shirking traditional responsibilities, yet it also marks a pivotal point in my artistic journey.
The exhibition, in all its diversity, inadvertently guided me towards a critical self-realization. My journey as a designer is less about conforming to a specific medium or societal expectation and more about finding my unique voice and path. While I may not have found all the answers at the exhibition, it has undoubtedly stirred a deeper introspection about what truly drives my creative spirit. In navigating the complexities of artistic expression, I am now more aware of the importance of authenticity and personal resonance in my work, a realization that I am sure will shape my contributions in the upcoming units.
