FoFM II

In my recent work, I primarily utilized the digital fabrication workshop's assets, with software and CNC routing completing the bulk of my projects. Eager to broaden my skill set, I reserved time in other workshops to hone my handcrafting abilities. This pursuit aligns with the essence of the Festival of Fast Making—leveraging the diverse campus resources to their fullest while fostering skill development. Yet, I encountered some challenges as I navigated the learning curve associated with mastering the tools.

Design of the sanding block

Upon completing the wood shelf, its sharp edges prompted me to consider using a sanding tool, as they made it uncomfortable to handle. Recognizing the need for refinement, I quickly moved to plan and sketch a solution.

Final work of the sanding block

After finalizing my plan and sketch, I headed to the wood workshop to consult with the technicians. They provided a concise demonstration on the use of various tools and machines, after which I embarked on crafting the sanding block independently.

Initially, the process unfolded smoothly. I employed the woodcutting machine and the sanding wheel to carve out the basic shape of the block. Yet, when it came to the finer details, I encountered difficulties. In my attempt to fashion a wedge, I experimented with several techniques but fell short of achieving the desired outcome. It wasn't until I put aside the machines and resorted to a handsaw that I managed to produce a wedge. Though it wasn't flawless, the experience enriched my crafting skills and knowledge.

Using the pottery wheel

Over the next few days, I dedicated time to the ceramics workshop, focusing solely on practicing with the pottery wheel by making cups. Despite having been a member of the ceramics society for a semester during my BA course, I faced significant challenges in mastering the wheel.

Enduring an entire day seated at the pottery wheel, I disposed of substantial amounts of waste clay in the learning process. Through perseverance, I gradually began to unravel the subtleties of the technique. This experience underscored a valuable lesson: certain crafting skills demand relentless practice and constant creation to be preserved and improved.
